Nwagua the hero as 10 man Pillars stun high-flying Rivers United

Kano Pillars defeated Rivers United by a lone goal in their NPFL Matchday Six encounter at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. It was a game between two of the biggest teams in the league, with Rivers United in second place on the log, and Pillars in 10th. The match came after Rivers United demolished Bloemfontein Celtic in the CAF Confederation Cup, and they were favourites to win. Recent history pointed at a Rivers United victory, as Pillars had won just one of their last 5 encounters with Rivers United.

Kano Pillars came into the game full of energy, pushing the Rivers United team back at every opportunity they got. They asked the questions and Rivers United’s Anaemena-marshalled defence stood strong until the 19th minute when striker, Nyima Nwagua found the back of the net for Sai Masu Gida. Pillars were reduced to 10 men when Abbas Rabiu received his marching orders following a second bookable offence in the 56th minute, but they were still far too strong for the Pride of Rivers.

Kano Pillars now have 11 points and are in 5th place on the table as Rivers United have lost the top spot to Nasarawa United.
