Choupo Moting strike insufficient as champions Bayern Munich crash out of Champions League

PSG qualify for second UCL semi-final in two years

Champions and favourites, Bayern Munich were sent crashing out of the UEFA Champions League on away goals after they could only muster a 1-0 win over Paris St Germain in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Parc des Princes.

Having picked up a 3-2 win away from home in Munich, PSG came out firing and looked to leave Bayern Munich dead and buried in the first half. Neymar was dazzling for the French champions as he played brilliantly and was twice stopped from scoring by the frame of the goal in two minutes. Shortly afterwards, the away side took the lead through Cameroonian striker Eric Maxim Choupo Moting in the 40th minute of the encounter. After taking the lead, Bayern Munich desperately tried to get a second goal that would send them through to the semifinals and were nearly caught out as Kylian Mbappe finished brilliantly when one on one with Manuel Neuer, only for the referee’s assistant to deem him to have been offside. Bayern were unable to score the goal they needed to qualify and the game ended 1-0 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.

Bayern Munich have now crashed out and will be unable to defend their title this season, making PSG one of the favourites to win the title after they reached the semifinals of the UCL in successive seasons. They will face the winners of the tie between Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund for a place in the final.
