Granada halt Barcelona title chase, record first win at Nou Camp in 108 years

La Liga title race blown wide open after shock Granada win

Granada picked up a famous 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona in their La Liga encounter on Thursday, leaving the Catalan giants 2 points adrift of top spot in the league. It was also Granada’s first ever win over Barcelona at the Nou Camp in their history.

Barcelona came into the game knowing a win of any kind would send them top of the league with only 5 games left to play. Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a fine strike into the bottom corner for his 26th league goal this season, sending the Blaugrana top momentarily in the 23rd minute. It went downhill from there, as Granada found an equaliser through Darwin Marchis in the 63rd minute, before 39 year old Jorge Molina was left completely unmarked in the Barcelona area and he duly converted in the 79th minute to make it 2-1 to Granada. Barcelona had their manager, Ronald Koeman sent off before Granada scored what would turn out to be their winner.

The defeat to Granada leaves Barcelona in third place on the La Liga table, ensuring that their destiny is no longer in their hands as they have to hope for favours from other teams if they are to win the La Liga title this season. They face table topping Atletico Madrid on Match Matchday 35, with Real Madrid facing Sevilla in the same week.
