Awoniyi, Ejuke score as Osimhen sees red for Napoli
Aribo scores in Rangers win as Kalu returns after scare
Nigerian strikers Taiwo Awoniyi and Victor Osimhen had different results in their respective sides this weekend. Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his fourth goal this season for his club in their 2-2 draw against TSG Hoffemheim in the German Bundesliga, and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen received a straight red card against Venezia in the Italian Serie A.
Awoniyi continued his fine form in front of goal since completing his ÂŁ6.5 million move from Liverpool as he scored for the second Bundesliga game in a row to secure a point for his side. The ex-Dream Team striker scored after 47 minutes to make it 2-2 and rescue a point for his side. Germany-born Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma had headed in an equaliser for Hoffenheim when they were 1-0 down, and Jacob Bruun Larsen added a second for Hoffenheim before Awoniyi equalised. The striker was played into space in behind the defence and hit a shot straight at the goalkeeper, but the defender made a mess of trying to clear his lines after the ball came back off the keeper, allowing Awoniyi a second bite of the cherry. The striker has now scored four times in four matches for Union Berlin in this season.
While Awoniyi added another goal to his collection, Osimhen had the worst luck in the world after he was deemed to have hit Venezia’s Daan Heymans in the face during a tussle and sent off after just 23 minutes of the match, which was eventually won by Napoli 2-0 thanks to goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Eljif Elmas. The striker may now have to miss out on the next three matches in the keague if his suspension is upheld.
Super Eagles winger Chidera Ejuke continued with his impressive form for CSKA Moscow in their 2-0 win over FK Akhmat. The winger scored in the 75th minute to make it 2-0 and take his tally to two goals and one assist in three games for the Russian side this season.
Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo opened his account with Rangers for the 2021/22 season with a well-taken strike in their 4-2 win over Ross County. Compatriot Leon Balogun was recalled from the bench to start the game in defence.
Winger Samuel Kalu also returned to action for Girondins de Bordeaux in their 1-1 draw against Angers. The winger fell unconscious in their last match against Olympique Marseille, but the condition was waved off by the team’s doctors as a dizzy spell and not a heart problem.
