Serena Williams named ‘Sports Illustrated”s Sportsperson of the Year
World number one tennis star Serena Williams has been named Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsperson of the Year.
The 34-year-old came close to clinching a calendar Grand Slam after winning the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2015, but she failed to take the US Open crown.
The American sportswoman is one victory shy of equalling Steffi Graf‘s record of 22 Grand Slam wins.
After her new title was announced, Williams took to Instagram to write: “This year was spectacular for me. For @SportsIllustrated to recognize my hard work, my dedication, and my sheer determination gives me hope to continue on and do better.
“As I always say, it takes a village it’s not just one person. This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team. I am beyond honored. I love you guys! 2016? #letsdoit.”
Williams won 53 out of 56 matches in 2015.
