Nigerians in Europe midweek review; Osimhen, Awoniyi score again

With action ongoing in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League, a number of Nigerians in Europe delivered impressive performances for their clubs in Europe’s top club competitions.

Here is a list of the best performers among the Nigerians in Europe over the midweek of October 19th to 21st:

1. Samuel Chukwueze: Villarreal ace Chukwueze marked his return from a five-month-long injury ordeal with a well-taken goal on his UEFA Champions League debut. He scored the final goal of the match as Villarreal defeated Young Boys 4-1.
2. Kelechi Iheanacho: Iheanacho made a telling contribution as he helped Leicester City overcome a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 against Spartak Moscow. Zambian striker Patson Daka scored four times for Leicester, but the first two goals were set up with precision by Iheanacho.
3. Victor Moses: Ex-Super Eagles winger Moses, like Iheanacho, delivered two assists for Spartak Moscow as they fell to Leicester City at home in the UEFA Europa League.
4. Taiwo Awoniyi: Awoniyi continued his blistering start to the season with another well-taken goal for Union Berlin in their 3-1 defeat to Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The striker, whose first half header halved the deficit before a late third came along, has now scored 10 times in 14 appearances this season for Union Berlin.
5. Leon Balogun: Balogun scored his first goal for Rangers and helped them keep a clean sheet at the other end as they won 2-0 against Brondby IF in their UEFA Europa League clash. The veteran defender opened the scoring before Kemar Roofe added a second.
6. Victor Osimhen: Osimhen continued his incredible run of form for Napoli as he came off the bench to score a brilliant goal for the Partenopei in their 3-0 win over Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Captain Lorenzo Insigne and Matteo Politano scored either side of Osimhen’s ninth goal of the season.

A number of Nigerians in Europe delivered top-class performances for their various sides, and with the Africa Cup of Nations just around the corner, maintaining this form could be crucial to Nigeria winning a first trophy since 2013.
