Walia Ibex of Ethiopia the only and the first at AFCON 2021
Coach Wubetu Abate sent shock waves round the whole continent when he released his final squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 25-man squad was dominated by players based in the country with only two abroad based players in Shemeles Bekele (El Gouna, Egypt) and Mujib Kassim (JS Kabilye, Algeria).
Walia Ibex of Ethopia became the only team at the tournament with non European based players with their all African-based squad.
With such decision comes the risk of losing games due to the an inexperienced players.
And with just 12 minutes at the AFCON, Yared Baye one of the home based players was sent off.
Baye who was initially given a yellow card was sent off after the VAR consultation showed he was the last man and for obstructing a goal bound move.
His inexperience caused the school boy mistake that led to the foul and ultimately the red card.
Baye put himself in a deadly situation after failing to control a back pass that turned into a 50-50 situation.
He was beaten for pace and decided to bring the striker down on the edge of the box.
Not bashing the defender but it was a school boy error that could have been avoided. His card eventually caused his team.
As they eventually lost the game 1-0 to Cape Verde – had he stayed on with 11v11 maybe the outcome would have been different.
They face the hosts Cameroon in their next match and then young and exciting Burkina Faso in their last game.
