‘Very small of them’ – Andre Ayew explains the reason behind the brawl in Ghana-Gabon tie

The Black Stars of Ghana captain Andre Ayew has explained the reason behind the brawl that erupted in their AFCON group C clash against Gabon on Friday.

Ghana who suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first game of the campaign needed a win to put themselves in a strong position in their second group game against Gabon at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

Andre Ayew goal of the season contender put Ghana in front before substitute Jim Allevinah drew Gabon level at the 88th minutes mark.

The equalizer angered the Ghanaians and they made their annoyance known at full time and started a brawl. Black Stars substitute Tetteh was seen throwing his fists at Gabon’s Aaron Boupendza.

Algerian referee Lahlou Benbraham was instructed by VAR room to hand a card to the player who threw the punch.

Benbraham was seen speaking with Thomas Partey who ended the game as the captain to bring ‘number 25’ back from the tunnel, with Tetteh being shown a red card as he emerged.

And Andre Ayew during his post match conference explained what happened and called Gabon small for what they did.

“A Ghanaian player was on the floor, we had the ball, we put the ball out intentionally because our player was on the floor, so when the ball is coming what do we do?

“You take the ball, Gabon, and you give it back to Ghana, simple as that, so we were waiting for the ball to come back but the ball didn’t come back, and they played and that was how they got their only open chance of the game.

“It is very small of them, I am disappointed in them, but no problem we are Ghana, we are going to win the last game and go through.”

The 1-1 draw means, Ghana now must beat Comoros in their last game to book a place in the knockout stages.
