Australian Open: Tsitsipas survives scare, joins Medvedev, Sinner in quarterfinals

The fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open continued in Melbourne on Monday January 24th with many of the big guns avoiding upsets and going through to the quarterfinals.

Greek World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas survived an early scare from American Taylor Fritz to book his place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Fritz won the first set 6-4  before Tsitsipas levelled matters 6-4 in the second set. Fritz claimed the third set 6-4 as well, before the world number four took charge of affairs at the Rod Laver Arena. Tsitsipas ended up winning the match 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

20-year-old Italian prodigy Jannik Sinner booked his place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open at the expense of world number 32 Alex de Minaur. The world number 11 only recently became the first man to make the Round of 16 in four consecutive Grand Slam before turning 21 since Juan Martin Del Potro in 2007. The Italian defeated de Minaur in straight sets 7-6 6-3 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal clash against Tsitsipas.

World number two Daniil Medvedev defeated unseeded American Maxime Cressy in a thriller at the Margaret Court Arena to book his place in the quarterfinals. Medvedev won the match 6-2 7-6 6-7 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime booked his place in the quarterfinals with a win over Marin Cilic in the Fourth Round of the Australian Open. The Canadian world number nine lost the first set before recovering to take the following three sets and win the game 2-6 7-6 6-2 7-6. He will do battle with Daniil Medvedev for a place in the semifinals.

Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi stunned world number two Aryna Sabalenka at the Margaret Court Arena to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The unseeded Estonian came from a set down against her opponent from Belarus to win 5-7 6-2 7-6 and book her place in the last eight.

Iga Swiatek defeated Sorana Cirstea to book her place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The Polish world number seven lost the first set before coming back to claim the victory 5-7 6-3 6-3 and book a quarterfinal clash against Kaia Kanepi.

Alize Cornet defeated World number 14 Simona Halep 6-4 3-6 6-4 in their Fourth Round clash at the Rod Laver Arena to book her place in the quarterfinals.

America’s Daniele Collins recovered from a set down to defeat Elise Mertens 4-6 6-4 6-4 and book her place in the quarterfinals, where she will face France’s Alize Cornet.
