Super Eagles goalie Daniel Akpeyi faces sack at Kaizer Chiefs?
Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi could be on his way out of his South African club Kaizer Chiefs.
The Nigerian goalkeeper who was a regular for the South African club before going to the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon is yet to play a single game since returning to his club.
Daniel Akpeyi has either been named on the bench or not even made the squad since returning from AFCON and coach Baxter Stuart mentioned fitness as the reason for his absence in the lineup.
“Daniel was away at Afcon, he came back after not playing in Afcon, missing a lot of our training. So it was going to be between the other three goalkeepers this evening. Brandon was outstanding in the camp in Cape Town.”
And now with the latest news coming out of South Africa, Daniel Akpeyi could be out of the team if the statement of Kaizer Jnr is anything to go by.
Kaizer Motaung Jnr reportedly told journalists at the launch of the Toyota sleeve sponsorship that his main objective was to reduce the average age of the squad and clean the house given that the approach applied over the last seven years “hasn’t worked”.
This means several of the over 30s could be on the chopping block, and that includes big names like veteran Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akpeyi, and skipper Bernard Parker.
Here are players likely to be impacted by Kaizer Jnr call to slice down the average age:
1. Bernard Parker, 35
2. Lebo Manyama, 31
3. Daniel Akpeyi, 35
4. Daniel Cardoso, 33
5. Khama Billiat, 31
6. Ramahlwe Mphahlele, 32
7. Itumeleng Khune, 34
8. Sifiso Hlanti, 31
9. Cole Alexander, 32
10. Phathutshedzo Nange, 30
11. Leonardo Castro, 32
12. Erick Mathoho, 32
13. Kearyn Baccus, 30
