Championship side Middlesbrough continued their FA Cup fairytale with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the competition after extra time at the Riverside Stadium.
Middlesbrough had already knocked out an illustrious opponent, Manchester United, in the fourth round of the competition. They were underdogs coming into their clash with a full-strength Tottenham Hotspur side that thrashed Leeds United 4-0 only days ago.
There was not much action between the sides in the first half, and Tottenham got their first real goal situation in the 59th minute when a close range Harry Kane finish was ruled out for an offside against the striker.
Both sides continued to probe and press each other, but neither was able to break the deadlock as the game headed into extra time.
Tottenham had the chance to take the game away from Middlesbrough, but goalkeeper Joe Lumley was at his brilliant best. Poor finishing from Steven Bergwijn and Heung-Min Son also cost the Premier League side.
Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder threw on teenage striker Josh Coburn for Andraz Sporar in the sixth minute of extra time. The move turned out to be a masterstroke by the former Sheffield United manager.
Only two minutes into the second half of extra time, Middlesbrough took the lead through 19-year-old Coburn. The striker found himself free in the box and hit a powerful effort past the outstretched arms of Hugo Lloris to put the home side in front. Middlesbrough held on for a famous victory in front of their fans that puts them in the draw for the quarterfinals of this year’s FA Cup.
