Guinea-Bissau hammer Sao Tome and Principe to leapfrog Nigeria in Group A

Guinea-Bissau have taken the commanding lead in the Group A of the AFCON 2023 Qualifiers after securing a big win against Sao Tome and Principe in the first group game.

The Djurtus who are Super Eagles’ familiar foes having recently played against one another at the 2021 AFCON group stages roared to the top of the group.

While Nigeria struggled to a 2-1 win against Sierra Leone in the game played in Abuja – Guinea-Bissau secured a big 5-1 home win against Sao Tome and Principe.

Jonathan Morsay scored the first goal of the game between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, Alex Iwobi equalized and Victor Osimhen scored the winning goal.

Just as in the Nigeria-Sierra Leone game, Sao Tome and Principe took the lead against Guinea-Bissau, the goal was scored by Edmilson Viegas.

Alfa Semedo equalized, Zinho Gano scored a brace, Zidane Banjaqui scored the 4th, and Jorginho scored the fifth goal of the game.

The 5-1 win takes Guinea-Bissau to the top of group A with a superior goal difference, Nigeria takes second place, Sierra Leone in the third, and Sao Tome and Principe in the last spot.

Up next for Nigeria is a trip to Sao Tome and Principe while Sierra Leone hosts Guinea-Bissau, both games would be played in four days’ time.
