Steven Gerrard fired as Aston Villa manager

Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard has been relieved of his duties as Aston Villa manager after seeing his side struggle in the 2022-23 season. The former Rangers manager was in charge for the West Midlands outfit for just 40 matches before his sacking.

After leading Rangers to a first Scottish Premiership crown in a decade, Gerrard decided to take up the challenge of the Premier League, replacing Dean Smith as Aston Villa manager in November 2021. He joined the Premier League as a highly-rated manager and was touted as a possible future replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Gerrard led Aston Villa for 40 games, winning 13 and losing 19 of them in total. The English manager lost six of his 11 matches in the Premier League with Villa despite making a number of summer signings. A damaging 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage proved to be the final straw for Gerrard’s case, with Aston Villa fans singing for him to leave their club during the match.

Steven Gerrard leaves Villa with a 32.5% win ratio and 47 goals scored in 40 matches. The side is also currently 12th in the Premier League, and the club’s hierarchy decided to part ways with the manager. A tweet from the club’s official account was used to announce the decision to sack the Englishman.
