Brilliant Onuachu nets four as Genk thrash Charleroi
Super Eagles star hits heights of 2020-21 season
Paul Onuachu was the protagonist for KRC Genk as they pummeled Charleroi 4-1 in their Belgian Jupiler League clash. The lanky striker scored all four of his side’s goals in the game to give them a convincing win over the struggling Charleroi.
After struggling for form and fitness at the beginning of the season, Onuachu finally caught fire in September and October and has carried that goal-scoring form into November, as well. The Super Eagles striker scored eight goals in six games between September and October 2022.
Onuachu wasted no time in introducing himself to the game as he dispatched a penalty kick clinically after only nine minutes to give his side the lead. The Nigerian striker doubled his and his side’s tally in the 35th minute after he was found by Mike Tresor Ndayishimiye.
Charleroi pulled one back in the 66th minute through Belgian midfielder Daan Heymans before Onuachu completed his hattrick five minutes after as he finished a pass from Ghana’s Joseph Pantsil. The Super Eagles striker rounded off the scoring in the final minute of time added on with a brilliant header from a deep cross by Rasmus Carstensen.
Onuachu’s four-goal haul makes him the first Genk player to achieve the feat since Wesley Sonck in 2003. He has now scored 12 goals in his last seven appearances for Genk. His goals have also sent the 2021 runners-up ten points clear of Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Jupiler League. Genk have also won nine straight games for the first time in the history of the club and are unbeaten in their last 15 games, winning 14 of them.
The in-form Paul Onuachu has become the player with the most headed goals in Europe since 2019-20 with 23 goals, ahead of Robert Lewandowski’s 19 headed goals. The Nigerian star looks to be hitting the heights he reached in the groundbreaking 2020-21 season.
