Brazil pay tribute to football Icon Pelé after South Korea win

Brazilian players displayed a banner in tribute to one of their own Edson Arantes do Nascimento better known as Pelé following news he has been moved to end-of-life care after he stopped responding to Chemotherapy.

A football Icon, one whose impact and name resounds the world over for his achievements in the beautiful game.

WHAT HAPPENED 

Brazil secured a resounding 4-1 win over South Korea to reach the Quater-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday night.

Immediately after the game, the players stepped onto the pitch with a banner with the name of legendary PELÉ who is battling for his life.

A message of support and tribute for a man who dedicated his life to the growth of the game and achieved great success in the Yellow and blue shirt.

A mutual show of support, a message from the Social media handles of the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cup winner had earlier revealed he was still following the teams progress.

PELÉ : THE MAKING

Pelé began his playing career at Santos aged 15. A year later, the Brazil national team came calling.

A hugely successful international career included three FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962 and 1970).

Pelé is the all time leading scorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games. At

Credited with connecting the phrase “The Beautiful game” with football, Pelé’s “electrifying play and penchant for spectacular goals” made him a star.

In 2000, Pelé was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) and was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century.

His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, which includes friendlies, is recognised as a Guinness World Record.

He retired from active football in 1977.

THE BEST GIFT FOR PELÉ 

While the banner represents a message of support, the Samba Boys know the best gift for PELÉ will be a FIFA World Cup title win in Qatar.

It is 20 years since Brazil’s last World Cup title win, if they can go all the way in Qatar to get the title, then it will give them a fitting stage to honour the great PELÉ.

WHO IS BRAZIL’S QUATER-FINAL OPPONENT 

Brazil will face Croatia in the Quater Final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Croatians were 3-1 Penalty shoot-out victors over Japan in the Round of 16.

With star-man Neymar back to full fitness, Brazil will begin the last-8 clash as favourites but must be wary of the Croatians who finished second best at the last World Cup.
