Ruthless Brighton March on, stun hapless Liverpool

Reds suffer second successive league defeat, winless in three games

Brighton and Hove Albion leapfrogged Liverpool in the Premier League standings after a 3-0 thrashing of the Reds at the Amex Stadium. Solly March contributed two goals and an assist for the Seagulls in their win over Liverpool.

Liverpool needed a response after receiving a beatdown at the hands of Brentford in their last league match before escaping with a contentious draw in their FA Cup tie against Wolves.

Brighton were dealing with an internal crisis after a public falling out between manager Roberto De Zerbi and star forward Leandro Trossard, but they did not let that hinder them against the Reds. Despite Trossard’s absence, they played on the front foot throughout the first half and were nearly rewarded with a penalty in the closing moments, only for the VAR to flag March offside before the foul was committed.

Brighton took only a minute of the restart to fire themselves ahead as March swept home from inside the box after a pass from Japanese forward Kaoru Mitoma in the 47th minute.

March doubled his and his side’s tally only six minutes later with a terrific finish from inside the box after receiving a pass from 18-year-old striker Evan Ferguson. The Englishman lashed an effort past Alisson to make it two for the Seagulls.

The Seagulls were in dreamland in the 82nd minute as Danny Welbeck scored a third for them. The former Arsenal man received a pass from March before flicking the ball over Joe Gomez and firing past Alisson at his near post.

The win takes Brighton up to seventh on the league table while Liverpool drop to eighth. The Reds are now winless in three in all competitions and have lost three times as many matches as they lost last season in the league. The Seagulls have won three matches on the spin with convincing performances.
