Gakpo reacts to maiden Liverpool goal as Reds win the Merseyside derby

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has reacted to scoring his first-ever goal for Liverpool after helping the Reds secure a 2-0 win against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The Dutch forward has been labeled ‘agent 007‘ by rival fans after his failure to score or assist a goal in his first 6 games for Liverpool.

But finally, he has found the back of the net and done so in one of Liverpool’s biggest games, against their neighbours and rivals, Everton.

Mo Salah scored the first goal for his 100th Premier League goal involvement at Anfield (71 goals and 29 assists in 104 appearances).

Before Cody Gakpo also scored the second goal to hand Liverpool their first Premier League win in 2023.

Gakpo expressed his delight at scoring his first goal in Liverpool colours.

“I think we press good here, Robbo gets the ball, little one-two with Hendo, good switch of play. I have to be at the second post.

“You have to be ready because you never know, sometimes the defender takes it away, sometimes you miss it, but I have to be there to tap it in,” he told Sky Sports of his goal.

“It’s amazing. I think this was more special than the other few games I’ve played here, and I’m really grateful for all the support in all the games, and this game especially.

“I think it was a great game for our side, we really needed this. We were struggling the last few games and this was a good moment for us to turn this around and I think we did it.”

“I think for every attacking player it’s one point you have to do – score goals – and you have to try to do your best to help the team where you can. Then it’s up to the coach for the choices he makes for the starting 11,” Gakpo added.

“I think it’s good that they come back now we have more options, more quality, and we’re more likely to win games. That’s most important at this point. Obviously, I played a few games in the center.

“And more like a false nine to be involved in the build-up, try and be involved in the build-up, and from there go forward. It’s another role than I’m used to, but it’s good for me to improve the position and keep working.”

Liverpool will be hoping to carry their form to St. James Park when they face Newcastle this weekend.
