Osimhen nets landmark goal as Napoli stroll to convincing win
Super Eagles striker up to 21 goals for Partenopei in Serie A
Victor Osimhen continued to shine for Napoli as he scored a brace for them in their 4-0 win over Torino to send them 21 points clear in Serie A. The Partenopei head into the international break clear on top of the league.
The in-form Osimhen scored a brace for his side in their midweek Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, including a Goal of the Week-winning header. The 24-year-old striker continued his fine form with another impressive header after only nine minutes as he converted a corner from Piotr Zielinski to score his 20th league goal of the season. He showed great movement to run across his marker and generate enough power on his header past the goalkeeper.
Torino, who started with Ola Aina on the bench, improved as the game went on, asking questions of the Napoli backline. It was, however, the visitors that scored the game’s second goal.
Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down in the box, causing the referee to point to the spot. The 21-year-old stepped up and fired home the resulting spot kick in the 35th minute to take his tally for the season to 12 goals.
Only six minutes into the second half, Osimhen scored his second of the game after more impressive interplay. Kvaratskhelia played a backheel into the path of Uruguayan left-back Mathias Olivera, who crossed to the far post for the striker to head home from a tight angle for his 21st goal of the season, breaking Simy Nwankwo’s record of most goals by a Nigerian player in a single Serie A season.
Napoli were not done scoring and added a fourth to their tally in the 68th minute through substitute midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. The Partenopei held on for a convincing win which sends them 21 points clear, albeit having played one game more than second-place Inter Milan. The Partenopei now have 71 points, a record in the history of the club after 27 games.
Aina came on for the home side in the final 15 minutes of the encounter, replacing Wilfried Singo at right-back.
