Premier League champions Manchester City showed their mettle as they recovered from a goal down to trounce Liverpool 4-1 at the Etihad. The Citizens became the first team to beat Liverpool after going behind in 45 games.
The champions received an injury blow before the crucial game as top scorer Erling Haaland was ruled out through injury for the game.
Liverpool started the match on the front foot and were rewarded in the 17th minute as Mohamed Salah scored a brilliant goal. The Egyptian forward latched onto a pass from Diogo Jota and curled an effort past Ederson to open the scoring.
The champions found an equaliser only ten minutes later after a brilliant team move which started with Riyad Mahrez on the right. The players worked the ball to the opposite flank, where Jack Grealish crossed a low ball into the box for Julian Alvarez to fire the ball home.
Manchester City started the second half on the front foot, going ahead within a minute of the restart. Mahrez sent in a low cross to Kevin De Bruyne, who fired home from close range to turn the game on its head.
The Citizens put their feet on the pedal and duly added a third in the 53rd minute through captain Ilkay Gundogan, who swept home from inside the box after a loose ball fell into his path.
Manchester City added a fourth in the 78th minute through the mercurial Grealish to round off the scoring in the game. The Englishman fired home from inside the box after he was found by De Bruyne following a quick transition.
The champions became the first side in 45 matches to win against Liverpool after conceding the first goal. They narrowed the gap to leaders Arsenal to five points as the season approaches its conclusion.
