Revealed: Why Liverpool fans are furious with Iheanacho after goal against Manchester City

Super Eagles striker nets consolation goal in defeat against champions

Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho was the recipient of the fury of Liverpool fans after he scored for the Foxes in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. The striker came off the bench to score the consolation goal for his side in Dean Smith’s first game in charge.

Like his predecessor Brendan Rodgers, Smith opted to start Iheanacho on the bench against his former team as he looks to navigate his way out of relegation troubles. The English manager preferred the experience of Jamie Vardy up front, but the misfiring striker was ineffectual as Manchester City strolled to a 3-0 lead by halftime thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland and a John Stones rocket.

Iheanacho was introduced in place of the veteran at half-time, and he delivered an impressive second-half showing which he capped off with a goal in the 75th minute, his fourth in the league this season.

Liverpool fans on Twitter were not happy about the goal, though, and they showed it in their tweets about the match.

For context, the striker missed a sitter for Leicester City when they faced Manchester City in their title run-in in the 2018-19 season. The eventual champions won the game 1-0 thanks to a thunderbolt from captain Vincent Kompany, breaking the hearts of Liverpool fans, who were hoping to capitalise on a slip. The result meant Manchester City moved ahead of Liverpool into first place, and they did not relinquish the position until the end of the season.

Even after four years, Liverpool fans are yet to heal from the heartbreak caused by Iheanacho/Manchester City.
