Osimhen hails George Weah after surpassing his 24-year long record

Victor Osimhen has hailed the impact 1995 Ballon d`or winner George Weah has on African players hours after surpassing his 24-year long goal-scoring record in Italy.

On Sunday May 7, the 24-year old Napoli striker scored his 47th goal in Italy to go past the former AC Milan strikers goal-scoring record in Italy.

This happened few days after he scored his 46th goal to go level with the current Liberian President to inspire a first Scudetto in 33-years for Napoli at the Stadio Fruili.

Against Fiorentina, Napoli elected to have the Italian Serie A top-scorer award chasing striker take a first half spot-kick but he missed his attempt.

In the 47th minute, another penalty kick was awarded to the Champions. This time, Osimhen made no mistake as he scored to reach a new African record landmark, a feat he is happy and honoured to achieve.

“It’s really amazing. A big respect to George Weah. He has put Africa on the map when he was playing here with AC Milan. For me to surpass him is a big honour, a big respect to him,” Osimhen told BT Sports after the match.

“His son, Timothy Weah is my very good friend. And I want to say he has inspired a lot of African players and I’m happy to surpassed his record. He will forever be a legend for me. And I’m really happy about this feat, ” he added.

George Weah remains the only African footballer to win the Ballon d`or award a feat he achieved in 1995 following sensational performances at PSG and later AC Milan.
