Boniface beats Kane to Bundesliga POTM, Joins Haaland in An Exclusive List

Victor Boniface has beat off competition from Harry Kane to claim the Bundesliga player for the month of August.

The 22-year-old striker, who made a spectacular debut for the Super Eagles by contributing to a goal last week, was the top choice for the prestigious title in the German league last month.

The selection process for the award involved two stages, taking into account the players’ individual performance data as well as fan and expert votes. The August award specifically considered performances from Matchdays 1 and 2 of the season.

During August, Boniface made significant contributions to Bayer Leverkusen’s victories, scoring twice and assisting in another goal. His impact was undeniable, as he registered more shots than any other player in the Bundesliga, totaling 14 shots. In a stunning display of his skills, during the second matchday against Gladbach, he unleashed 11 attempts on Jonas Omlin’s goal. Remarkably, this equaled the total number of shots Harry Kane managed across Matchdays 1 and 2.

Boniface’s incredible work ethic also made a strong impression, with him contesting the highest number of challenges (54) in the Bundesliga. His relentless pressing on the field resulted in a remarkable 43 percent success rate.

Notably, the striker’s outstanding performances earned him not only the Player of the Month award but also the Rookie of the Month title. This extraordinary achievement places him in the elite company of players, with Erling Haaland being the last to win both awards in the same month back in 2020.

To add to his accolades, Victor Boniface was previously honored with the Rookie of the Month award for August, solidifying his status as the second player ever, after Erling Haaland, to clinch both the Bundesliga POTM and Rookie awards in the same month.
