Wayne Rooney Quits DC United role
Former Manchester United FC striker, Wayne Rooney has quit his role as DC United Coach after they missed out on the MLS play-off.
Rooney joined DC United in July 2022 as Coach, a return to the Washington-based outfit where he spent 18-months as a player in 2018/2019.
The former Derby County manager, leaves DC United on mutual consent after the club missed out on a Major League Soccer playoffs spot despite a 2-0 win over New York City in their final game of the regular season.
” It is the right time (to leave). I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the play-offs , it’s not a single thing that happened, it’s about timing, ” Rooney told the Press.
In a separate statement, DC United Chief Executive and co-chairman, Jason Levien said Wayne Rooney’s departure was in the interest of both parties.
” We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time, ” Jason Levien said.
” This decision will creates the avenue for our new general manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure onto our sporting operations, which begins with critical identification of are head coach who will best align with this.
” We are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the Nations capital, first and a DC United player and captain and most recently as coach, “the co-chairman added.
