Maduka Okoye and Tyrone Ebuehi part of Super Eagles 2023 AFCON plans – Jose Peseiro confirms
Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro has confirmed that goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and Tyrone Ebuehi are part of his plans for the 2023 AFCON.
At the last AFCON hosted by Cameroon, Maduka Okoye was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper but was criticized for the Eagles round-16 loss to Tunisia after mistiming a shot from distance in a 0-1 loss.
His spot in the team has been taken by Omonia Nicosia goalie Francis Uzoho though the change has not been without its own controvercies.
During this time, Okoye has missed several Nigeria Super Eagles call-ups with Isreal-based Adebayo Adeleye and home-based duo of Sochima Victor and Ojo Olorunleke.
For Ebuehi, his place has been taken by Boavista defender, Bruno Onyeamachi, Ola Aina and Fenerbache man Bright Osayi-Samuel.
When asked during an interview with Sportitalia (via TMW) whether he would take Okoye and Ebuehi to the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles gaffer said:
“They belong to the group of players we follow and are part of the list of those we normally call.
“This way, they can participate in any competition the Super Eagles play in.”
Peseiro will lead Nigeria’s charge for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Ivory Coast after lifting the title in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
Before the AFCON, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification journey when they face Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November 2023.
