Algeria held to 1-1 draw by Angola in AFCON opener
Algeria began their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-1 draw against Angola in the opening match of Group D, decided on Monday, January 15, 2024.
Baghdad Bounedjah provided the lead for Algeria in the first half, cleverly finishing with the outside of his right foot after being sent clear by a long ball from midfield. Despite Algeria’s dominance in possession and chances, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
The turning point came when former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb committed a foul in Algeria’s penalty area, resulting in a penalty for Angola. Mabululu stepped up to convert the penalty, with his effort hitting the crossbar and bouncing down over the line, leveling the score at 1-1.
Algeria, captained by former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, faced a resilient Angola side that managed to secure a crucial point in their AFCON opener.
