2024 Australian Open Day Two: Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Gauff, Jabeur all progress

Murray, Osaka knocked out of tournament

Third seed Daniil Medvedev had a straightforward passage into the second round of the 2024 Australian Open after his first round win over Terence Atmane. He recovered from a set down to claim a 5-7 6-2 6-4 1-0 win over his opponent, who struggled with an injury before retiring.

Eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his place in the second round with a win over Zizou Bergs in four sets. The Greek star came from behind to win 5-7 6-1 6-1 6-3 in the first round encounter.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry dispatched of Andy Murray in straight sets to end the veteran’s participation in the competition. The Argentine claimed a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win to reach the second round in Melbourne.

Ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz defeated Omar Jasika in straight sets to reach the second round of the 2024 Australian Open. The Pole claimed a 7-6 6-4 6-2 win to progress.

Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Dominic Thiem in a first-round classic at the Australian Open. The Canadian claimed a 6-3 7-5 6-7 5-7 6-3 win in five sets against his Austrian opponent to reach the second round.

In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff continued her fine run of form with a straight sets win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. The fourth seed picked up a 6-3 6-0 win to progress to the second round.

Unseeded Dayana Yastremska stunned Marketa Vondrousova at Melbourne, defeating her in straight sets to reach the second round of the competition. The Ukrainian claimed a 6-1 6-2 win to go through.

Sixth seed Ons Jabeur claimed a straight sets win over Yulia Starodubtsewa to reach the second round of the 2024 Australian Open. The Tunisian won the match 6-3 6-1 to progress from the first round.

Caroline Garcia defeated Naomi Osaka on her return to tennis following time out. The French 16th seed claimed a 6-4 7-6 win over the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Elina Svitolina defeated Taylah Preston 6-2 6-2 in straight sets to reach the second round of the 2024 Australian Open.
