Guinea advances to AFCON quarter-finals with last-minute winner vs Equatorial Guinea
Guinea secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a last-gasp winner against Equatorial Guinea. The match appeared destined for extra time until Mohamed Bayo’s stoppage-time header sealed a 1-0 victory for Guinea.
Equatorial Guinea had their chances earlier in the game, with Emilio Nsue missing a penalty and Federico Bikoro receiving a red card, leaving them with 10 men. Despite being a man down, Equatorial Guinea pressed for the opening goal, but Nsue’s penalty hit the post, leaving the scoreboard unchanged.
Guinea, having the better of the chances throughout the game, finally found their breakthrough in the final minute of added time. Mohamed Bayo rose to meet Ibrahim Diakite’s cross from the right wing, heading the ball past Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
With no time left for Equatorial Guinea to respond, Guinea advanced to the quarter-finals. They will now face the winner of the Egypt vs. DR Congo match in their quest for further progress in the tournament.
Equatorial Guinea, celebrated for their impressive performances in the group stages where they finished ahead of Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire, exited the competition after failing to secure a spot in the quarter-finals for the first time in four tournament appearances.
