William Troost-Ekong provides update on Injury ahead of AFCON quarter-final
Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has given insights into his injury status ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 quarterfinal against Angola.
Troost-Ekong scored the only goal in Nigeria’s group stage match against Côte d’Ivoire but missed the subsequent game against Guinea-Bissau due to fitness concerns.
While Troost-Ekong played the full 90 minutes in the match against Cameroon, concerns were raised when he didn’t participate in Nigeria’s first training session ahead of the quarterfinal clash with Angola.
In a brief interview, Troost-Ekong acknowledged his ongoing struggle with injuries since the Ivory Coast game but assured fans that he would be ready to play if selected.
He mentioned that he’s managing himself, and the final decision rests with the coach.
“I’ve been struggling with injuries since the Ivory Coast game, so I’m trying to manage myself, but I will be ready to play on Friday if the coach selects me.
“We are trying to improve on every game and analyse our game, and we will also analyse Angola.” he said.
Despite the absence of Troost-Ekong in the game against Guinea-Bissau, Kenneth Omeruo stepped in and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s victory.
Omeruo is expected to replace Troost-Ekong again if the vice-captain is not fully fit for the quarterfinal.
The status of Troost-Ekong’s injury remains a point of interest, and fans await official updates from coach Jose Peseiro regarding the defender’s availability for the crucial match against Angola.
