Fulham manager hails Iwobi and Bassey after goals to secure victory against Manchester United
Nigerian internationals, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey emerged as the heroes for Fulham on a historic night at the Theater of Dreams, securing a memorable 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
Fulham manager, Marco Silva, showered praise on Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for their instrumental roles in securing the win.
Both players had recently featured in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria against Cote d’Ivoire and were included in Silva’s starting lineup for the crucial clash at Old Trafford.
In the 65th minute, Bassey broke the deadlock with a confident right-footed finish, his first goal in the Premier League since joining Fulham FC from Ajax last summer.
Despite Manchester United’s late equalizer by Harry Maguire in the 89th minute, Fulham had the last laugh when Iwobi expertly found the back of the net deep into stoppage time.
Reflecting on the match, Silva expressed his satisfaction at guiding Fulham to their first away victory at Old Trafford since 2003, highlighting the pivotal contributions of Iwobi and Bassey.
Speaking to BeINSports, Silva emphasized the importance of their goals and their overall significance to Fulham’s style of play.
He stated, “The two players (Bassey and Iwobi) that were at the Africa Cup (of Nations) were decisive in terms of the goal. It just shows how they are important for us in the way I want to play, in our way. It’s really nice to see both scoring goals and helping us to win.”
With this remarkable win, Fulham solidified their position at 12th on the Premier League table for the weekend, irrespective of other match results.
