Nigeria’s Favour Ofili shines with record-breaking speed
Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili showcased her exceptional speed and form as she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m event at the Battle of the Bayou in Louisiana.
Representing Louisiana State University (LSU), Ofili clocked an impressive 10.85 seconds (+2.6m/s), marking her fastest 100m time ever in any conditions.
Competing in her first individual outdoor race of the season, Favour Ofili demonstrated her prowess by outpacing her former college teammate Brianna Lyston, who finished closely behind in 10.87 seconds. Another collegiate athlete, McKenzie Long, secured third place with a time of 10.89 seconds.
Although Ofili’s time would have set a new lifetime best, the excessive wind reading prevented it from being officially recognized. Nevertheless, her performance stands as the second-fastest season opener by a Nigerian athlete in history, just behind track legend Blessing Okagbare’s record of 10.72 seconds set in 2018.
The 21-year-old sprinter has shown remarkable early-season form, highlighted by her recent achievements. Earlier this year, she shattered the 300m African Record, previously held by Amantle Montsho for 14 years, with a stunning time of 35.99 seconds.
This remarkable feat not only secured her a second-place finish but also surpassed the Nigerian Record set by compatriot Christy Opara.
With her current peak performance, Favour Ofili is poised to surpass her Personal Best of 10.93 seconds. As the season progresses and more professional races beckon, the Nigerian speedster aims to further elevate her performance in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
