‘Time to trust our own’ – NFF President reflects on new Super Eagles coach appointment

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has emphasised the difficulty of the decision to appoint Finidi George as the new permanent coach of the Super Eagles.

Despite the challenge, Gusau believes it’s time to show faith in homegrown talent.

Following the conclusion of Jose Peseiro’s contract after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Finidi George, who had been serving as interim manager, has now officially taken over the role.

Gusau stated, “It wasn’t an easy decision. We’ve to begin to trust our own.” He expressed the NFF’s commitment to supporting Finidi and giving him the necessary respect and backing when he added, “We will give Finidi all the respect and support he needs.”

The decision to appoint Finidi reflects a desire to endorse a Nigerian coach after Peseiro’s tenure.

Gusau believes that Finidi, currently managing Enyimba, deserves the opportunity to lead the national team despite his limited experience at the highest level.

Finidi George boasts an impressive playing career, representing Nigeria in 62 international matches and contributing to their successes in the 1994 AFCON and the Olympic Games in Atlanta ’96. Additionally, he has showcased his coaching abilities by guiding Enyimba to the Nigerian Premier Football League title in 2022/23 and maintaining their competitive edge in the current season.
