Former Nigeria International lists what Finidi George will achieve as Super Eagles coach with the right support
Finidi George is set to lead Nigeria in his first matches as the permanent head coach since his recent appointment. The 53-year-old officially took over from Jose Peseiro, whom he worked under for 22 months before Peseiro’s departure two months ago.
Former Nigeria international, Andrew Aikhoumogbe, has now listed what Finidi George can achieve as Super Eagles head coach if given the right support.
He aslo expressed confidence in Finidi’s ability to guide the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Nigeria have not played at the World Cup since 2018 in Russia, and there is pressure to reach the 2026 edition in North America. For many fans, expectations will be sky-high because of their unexpected run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations,” Aikhoumogbe noted.
While congratulating Finidi on his appointment, Aikhoumogbe acknowledged the pressure that comes with the role but believes Finidi can deliver success with the right support.
“I feel very happy for Finidi George on his appointment as the Super Eagles head coach. This appointment calls for more hard work from him because a lot will be expected from him,” he said. “But then, I believe with the right support, Finidi will get the job done in terms of qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup. That is his major priority and I also believe that he will deliver.”
The Super Eagles are striving for their first win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after drawing against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Despite their past achievements, including winning the Africa Cup of Nations three times, Nigeria has yet to advance past the Round of 16 in the World Cup. Many are now wondering if Finidi can break that streak and lead Nigeria to greater success on the world stage.
