Abia Warriors continue meteoric rise with win over Wikki
Now unbeaten in 4 games and into top half
Abia Warriors battled to a 1-0 victory over visiting Wikki Tourists at the Okigwe Township Stadium in their NPFL Matchday 13 encounter on Saturday.
In a tight match in Okigwe, Abia Warriors found themselves ahead on the cusp of halftime thanks to a penalty from midfielder Fatai Abdullahi in the 45th minute. The midfielder has now scored three goals in this season’s NPFL, with the other two being from direct freekicks. The Umuahia Landlords, who barely had time to recover after they returned from Wednesday’s away game at Ilorin held on for the win as they continued with their impressive run of form.
The Umuahia Landlords have now picked up 13 points from the last 18 on offer, only losing once in their last six games, and now move up to 9th place on the log. The club management’s decision to keep faith in experienced coach, Imama Amapakabo seems now to be paying dividends as they look to have turned their season around. In his post match press duties, coach Amapakabo highlighted that even when things were not going well for the team, he had a clear vision of what they were doing wrong and since when they corrected their mistakes, they have been flying in the league.
The Abia state-based side now have all of one week to rest and recover before their crunch Oriental derby against Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri next week.
