Aboubakar brace gives Cameroon AFCON 2021 opener win against Burkina Faso

Vincent Aboubakar scored two goals from the spot kick to hand Cameroon a 2-1 comeback win against Burkina Faso on Sunday.

The much anticipated and widely talked about Africa Cup of nations stated with a win for the hosts against the Stallions of Burkina Faso.

With the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and Cameroon president Paul Biya and other dignitaries in attendance at the Stade Olembe.

The Stallions of Burkina Faso opened the scoring when former Chelsea player Bertrand Traore set up Gustavo Sangare for the first goal of the tournament.

Bertrand Traore who was the captain of the Stallions would have himself to blame for the equaliser as his foul on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa handed Cameroon a penalty.

Vincent Aboubakar stepped up and scored in the 40th minutes, 16th minutes after they went behind.

Another madness from Burkina Faso in the 45 minutes of the game gave Cameroon another penalty which was again converted by the Indomitable Lions captain Vincent Aboubakar.

Cameroon who were the second best team on the pitch went into half time break 2-1 up against a much better Burkina Faso.

The second half was more of the same with Burkina Faso led by Bertrand Traore pushing for the equalizer.

They had chances but Andre Onana in goal denied them.

In the end, Vincent Aboubakar goals handed Cameroon the first win of the 2021 AFCON.

For Vincent Aboubakar it was his 3rd goal at the tournament in 9 games. He previously has 1 goal in 8 AFCON games.

His only goal before this brace was in the 2017 AFCON final when Cameroon beat Egypt 2-1 to claim the edition’s top prize.
