AC Milan were crowned Champions of Italy after an amazing season was capped off by a 3-0 thrashing of Sassuolo on the final day of the season.
AC Milan came into the game knowing they only needed a draw to claim their first Serie A title since 2011. The Rossoneri showed they wanted the league title and started the game very positively, with all of Olivier Giroud, Sandro Tonali, Alexis Saelemaekers and Fikayo Tomori denied by the Sassuolo goalkeeper and defenders in the opening 15 minutes.
AC Milan would eventually take the lead in the 17th minute through former Chelsea and Arsenal striker Giroud, who was left free in the box to smash home a cut-back from Rafael Leao after a dazzling run down the left wing from the Portuguese winger.
The Rossoneri added a second in eerily similar fashion 15 minutes later as Leao embarked on a similar run and fed Giroud, who applied a similar type of finish. The game was put to bed in the 36th minute as Leao once again cut the ball back to the departing Franck Kessie to sidefoot home and make it 3-0 to the visitors.
40-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench late in the game and thought he had scored on what may be his final appearance for AC Milan, but his header was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.
The Rossoneri claimed their 19th league title and their first since 2011, edging city rivals Inter Milan to the title by only two points despite their 3-0 win over Sampdoria. A second-half goal from Ivan Perisic and a second-half brace from Joaquin Correa were all that Inter needed to thrash Sampdoria on the final day of the season.
After finishing in second place 12 points behind champions Inter last season, AC Milan have now secured their own league crown.
