Adebayo Adeleye critical of self after Super Eagles debut in Algeria

Super Eagles goalkeeper makes first national team appearance

New Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye was critical of his performance in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Algeria in a test match in Constantine. The Hapoel Jerusalem shot-stopper revealed how he felt about his debut for the national team in an interview after the match.

Adeleye, who started the match on the bench, was substituted on in place of Watford goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. The 22-year-old had little to do but could not save the penalty struck by striker Aymen Mahious in the dying embers as the home side salvaged a draw on the occasion. The young goalkeeper stated that he felt great to debut for the Super Eagles but that he could have done better with the penalty as he had hoped for a clean sheet.

“I feel great to play for the Super Eagles, I just feel great to play. I am very happy to have my first debut with the team today, I am glad.”

“Every goalkeeper wants the clean sheet so I hoped I could save the penalty but we’ll try next time.”

The Hapoel Jerusalem man also revealed that the side was preparing for the friendly against the Algerians on Tuesday, and they hope to claim a positive result.

“We’re working hard in training and I am looking forward to the game and just go there and give our best and hope for the result.”

One of Francis Uzoho or Maduka Okoye is expected to return to the starting line-up for Tuesday’s game, but Adebayo Adeleye will hope to impress the manager enough in training to be called upon for the game.
