Ademola Lookman fires Nigeria to victory over Cameroon to book 2023 AFCON quater-final spot
Nigeria defeated Cameroon 2-0 to reach the quater-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament on Saturday, January 27, 2024. SportsRation reports.
Ademola Lookman scored both goals with assists from Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi to hand the Super Eagles victory in the round of 16 clash at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.
Ten minutes into the game, Semi Ajayi thought finished off a rebound bu that effort was ruled out after a VAR review showed the defender was in an offside position.
Undettered by the dissallowed goal, Super Eagles of Nigeria kept pressing and got due reward in the 36th minute when Victor Osimhen unselfishly paased to Ademola Lookman to shoot under goalkeeper Ondoa to open the scoring.
Both teams had opportunities to add to the scoreline but there was no other goal until the final minute of regulation time.
Alex Iwobi squared the ball neatly for Ademola Lookman to bag his brace and double Nigeria’s lead vs a hapless Cameroon team who could not find inspiration despite the introduction of Vincent Aboubakar.
At the expiration of regulation time, the Super Eagles emerged victorious 2-0 over their arch-rivals Cameroon, to reach the AFCON last-8.
Nigeria will now face Angola in the quater-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
