Ademola Lookman strengthens claim for CAF Men’s Player of the Year with Ballon d’Or nomination
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has been nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or following an extraordinary 2023/24 season. SportsRation reports.
Lookman, 26, becomes the only African player shortlisted for the prestigious award, further boosting his case for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year.
The nomination follows a memorable year for Lookman, who showcased his talents both for Nigeria and Italian club Atalanta. The former Everton striker was instrumental in Nigeria’s journey to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he finished as the team’s top scorer with three goals. His outstanding performances helped the Super Eagles secure a silver medal.
Lookman’s achievements did not end with the AFCON, as he also made history with his club Atalanta. He played a key role in helping the Bergamo-based club win their first-ever European title, leading them to victory in the UEFA Europa League. His spectacular hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen secured Atalanta’s first major trophy in 63 years.
Across the 2023/24 season, Lookman scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions—17 goals for Atalanta and five for Nigeria. His consistent form at both the international and club levels has earned him widespread recognition.
Lookman’s Ballon d’Or nomination further cements his status as one of Africa’s brightest football stars and strengthens his case to be named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year. As the only African player on the 30-man shortlist, he stands out as a leading contender for continental honours.
Also, he is the 8th Nigeria Super Eagles star to be nominated for the prestigious award. Victor Osimhen finished eighth in the awards last year.
