Adesanya falls to unanimous decision defeat at UFC 259
Retains middleweight title despite loss
The Last Stylebender, Israel Adesanya succumbed to defeat at the hands of the UFC light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz at the main event in Las Vegas on Sunday morning.
Adesanya, who was looking to hold both the Middleweight and Light heavyweight titles simultaneously started the fight well against his opponent who is much more experienced in the division. It was a close fight that went down to the wire, but Blachowicz made use of his weight advantage to keep Adesanya pinned to the floor more times than he would have wanted.
Adesanya was able to win rounds 2 and 3, and his Polish adversary won rounds 1, 4 and 5. At the end of the fifth round, the judges unanimously named the Pole, Jan Blachowicz as the winner, with their scorecards reading 49-46, 49-45 and 49-45 all in his favour. This was Adesanya’s first defeat in the UFC, and he came so close to winning the fight. He would now look to focus on defending his middleweight title later this year.
After the fight, Blachowicz admitted that he was really happy to win the fight because Adesanya is one of the best in the world, and that the Nigerian hit him harder than he expected.
