AFCON 2019: Finidi wants Rohr to talk to Mikel, says Eagles need him in Egypt
Former Super Eagles player Finidi George is calling for the handler Gernot Rohr to have a chat with the captain John Mikel Obi ahead of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
Since Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, John Mikel Obi is yet to play for the Super Eagles with different reasons being cited as the reason for his absence.
But Finidi George who was a member of the 1994 AFCON winning team in Tunisia explained that even though he doesn’t know the details of his absence he wants Gernot Rohr to have a chat with the former Chelsea star.
“Personally, I don’t know the situation concerning his availability, but he is a respected captain and if his current form is okay, then it’s a plus for the team. He doesn’t need to play all qualifiers for him to have the opportunity to join the team, said Mikel as quoted by AOIFootball.
Finidi George who was part of arguably the best generation of Super Eagles explained the need for John Mikel Obi’s inclusion in the final squad for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
“He could be with the team even if he doesn’t get 90 minutes in all games; he could just help them in team building because he is a player other colleagues respect and the young ones will learn from.
“But as a coach, you need to speak to him before the tournament and clarify his role in the tournament to avoid a possible burst up and if he agrees then for me it will be a massive boost for the country in Egypt, “ Finidi concluded.
Should John Mikel Obi make the final cut he could be the first Nigerian to win two AFCON titles.
