AFCON 2025: Big Blow for Super Eagles as Ndidi to Miss Semi-final Clash with Morocco
Nigeria have been dealt a major setback at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Wilfred Ndidi was ruled out of the semi-final against hosts Morocco.
The midfielder picked up a yellow card during Nigeria’s 2–0 win over Algeria in Saturday’s quarter-final. It was his second booking of the tournament, which means he will serve a one-match suspension under AFCON rules.
Ndidi was cautioned in the 68th minute, with the Super Eagles already in control of the game. The booking came during a spell of pressure from Algeria as they tried to find a way back into the match.
The former Leicester City star later showed signs of discomfort and was substituted, with Raphael Onyedika coming on in his place. Ndidi has been one of Nigeria’s most important players in midfield and his absence will be a big concern ahead of the semi-final.
Despite losing Ndidi for the next round, Nigeria delivered a strong performance against Algeria. After a scoreless first half, the Super Eagles stepped up after the break.
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 47th minute, heading home from close range after meeting a well-delivered cross. Akor Adams then made it 2–0 ten minutes later, finishing off a fine team move involving Osimhen and Alex Iwobi.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the semi-final against Morocco, where they must cope without one of their key midfield players.
