AFCON 2025: Dessers out as Super Eagles push on

AFCON 2025 continues without Cyriel Dessers after the Super Eagles striker was ruled out through injury and sent back to his club in Greece.

The 31-year-old forward never made it onto the pitch in Morocco after struggling with a thigh problem that began during Nigeria’s group-stage matches. Team officials confirmed on Friday that medical checks showed he would not recover in time for the knockout rounds, leading to the decision for him to leave camp and continue treatment with Panathinaikos.

While Dessers’ departure reduces Nigeria’s attacking options on paper, the mood in camp remains calm. The Super Eagles have built confidence after a strong group stage, finishing with maximum points and wins over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Head coach Eric Chelle has made it clear throughout the tournament that no single player is bigger than the team. He has spoken often about trusting the full squad and avoiding over-reliance on one starting eleven.

Preparations for the Round of 16 are already underway. Twenty-five players trained on Friday evening. Defender Ryan Alebiosu was present but trained lightly as he continues to recover from a leg injury, while midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi missed the session due to a cold and is expected back once cleared.

According to team officials, Chelle reminded his players that the group stage is now behind them and that knockout football leaves no room for mistakes. Performances so far, he stressed, will count for little once the next match begins.
