AFCON 2025: Hosts Morocco Beat Comoros 2–0 in Opening Match

Hosts Morocco made a winning start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a comfortable 2–0 victory over Comoros at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah on Sunday.

The first half ended goalless, with Comoros putting up a strong defensive display to frustrate the Atlas Lions. Morocco dominated possession but found it difficult to create clear chances before the break.

Morocco had an early chance to take the lead when Brahim Díaz was fouled in the penalty area. However, Soufiane Rahimi’s spot kick was well saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor to keep the scores level.

After the interval, the hosts increased the tempo and were rewarded in the 55th minute. Noussair Mazraoui played a fine pass to Brahim Díaz, who calmly finished first time to give Morocco the breakthrough.

Morocco sealed the win in the 74th minute through substitute Ayoub El Kaabi, who scored with an impressive bicycle kick to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory gives Morocco three points and top spot in Group A. The Atlas Lions will face Mali next on Friday, December 26, while Comoros will look to bounce back when they take on Zambia on the same day.
