AFCON 2025: Nigerian Government Releases Update on Outstanding Super Eagles Allowances

The Federal Government has announced that all outstanding match bonuses owed to the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco have been released, following the resolution of administrative and foreign exchange challenges.

The confirmation was given on Thursday by the Minister of State for Finance, Mrs Doris Uzoka-Anite, through a statement on her verified X (formerly Twitter) handle. She explained that the delays were caused by foreign exchange procedures, which have now been successfully addressed.

According to the minister, the Federal Government worked in close collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to clear the hurdles and ensure that the players receive their entitlements without further setbacks. She disclosed that bonuses for all group-stage matches have been fully processed and approved.

Uzoka-Anite added that payments are already being transferred to the players’ accounts, noting that special arrangements were made to meet their preference for foreign currency payments. She said a fast-track conversion system was introduced to speed up the process.

“The final transfers to the players’ domiciliary accounts are currently ongoing and should reflect shortly,” the minister said, assuring that most beneficiaries would begin to see the funds from Thursday or Friday.

The update follows reports of tension within the Super Eagles camp, where players were said to have considered staging a protest over unpaid bonuses, including a possible refusal to travel for their next AFCON fixture against Algeria.

The finance minister also stated that new measures have been put in place to avoid similar delays in the future, promising a more efficient and predictable payment system in line with global standards.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of the national team, stressing that the priority is to allow the Super Eagles to remain fully focused as the tournament moves into the knockout stage, with the ultimate aim of lifting the AFCON trophy.
