AFCON 2025: Sadio Mane Scores as Senegal Hold DR Congo

Senegal came from behind to play out a 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the Stade Olympique de Rabat on Saturday in an AFCON 2025 Group D match. The result extended Senegal’s unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.
The Lions of Teranga controlled most of the first half and created several chances but could not score. Sadio Mane came close with a curling free-kick that went just wide, while Pape Gueye’s long-range shot was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. DR Congo thought they had taken the lead through Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
DR Congo broke the deadlock early in the second half. Cedric Bakambu took advantage of a loose ball after a poor save from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to give his side a surprise lead.
Senegal replied almost immediately. Mane, left unmarked from close range, calmly scored to make it 1-1 and register his first goal of the tournament.
After the equaliser, Senegal pushed forward and took control of the game. Ismaila Sarr, Nicolas Jackson and Pape Gueye combined well in attack, but Mpasi made important saves and the DR Congo defence held firm.
DR Congo also threatened on the counter-attack and forced Mendy into a few saves. Both teams made several changes late in the match, but neither side could find a winning goal.
The draw keeps Senegal top of Group D on goal difference and extends their unbeaten record against DR Congo to ten matches. DR Congo remain second in the group.
In the final group games, Senegal will face Benin in Tangier, while DR Congo will play Botswana in Rabat.
