AFCON: Atalanta Coach Reacts to Losing Ademola Lookman

Atalanta will be without Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman for several important Serie A matches as he joins Nigeria for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 28-year-old, who was recently included in Eric Chelle’s 55-man provisional squad, has become an important player for Raffaele Palladino’s side since arriving at the club. He scored in their 2–0 win over Fiorentina, adding to his three goals in ten matches this season.
If Lookman makes Nigeria’s final AFCON squad, his absence will come at a difficult time for the Bergamo club.
Palladino reacts to Lookman’s AFCON absence
Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino spoke about the situation in his pre-match press conference. He admitted that losing Lookman and another key player would be challenging, but said the team would welcome back Kolasinac and Scalvini, who are also important. He added that he hopes to have Sulemana fit again soon because he wants every player to feel involved.
Matches Lookman will miss
Lookman’s call-up means he will miss several key games. He will be unavailable for the Serie A match against Genoa on 21 December, the opening day of AFCON. He will also sit out two big home fixtures early in January, against Inter on 3 January and Roma on 7 January.
In addition, he will miss matches against Bologna, Torino, and Pisa, as well as the friendly or European game against Athletic Club.
Lookman’s absence is a major setback for Atalanta, who now face a busy run of fixtures without one of their most important attacking players.
