AFCON Qualifiers: Nigeria dethroned from top-spot following Guinea-Bissau win over Sao Tome and Principe
A 0-1 Guinea-Bissau win over Sao Tome and Principe has ensured Nigeria is dethroned from top-spot in Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
In the matchday five encounter decided on Wednesday June14, Belgium based Zinho Gano scored the winner for Guinea-Bissau vs Sao Tome and Principe to take the Djurtus points tally to 10.
That sees Baciro Cande’s team dethrone Nigeria who play Sierra Leone on Sunday June 18 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia.
Nigeria occupy second spot with 9-points while Sierra Leone are 3rd on the log with 5-points with two games to go.
In their penultimate clash of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Jose Peseiro tutored Super Eagles of Nigeria need to avoid defeat vs Sierra Leone to reclaim top-spot.
That will also mean confirmation of Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau’s qualification for the 2023 Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast with a game to spare.
However, A win for Sierra Leone on Sunday June 18 will take the qualification race to the last day.
If that happens, Nigeria will host Sao Tome and Principe seeking maximum points to qualify while Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone do battle in the other game.
