AFCON: Referee Daniel Laryea Plays Down Criticism After Nigeria’s Loss to Morocco

The Ghanaian referee Daniel Lwho handled Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final defeat to Morocco has responded to criticism of his performance, saying the controversy was “just football”.

Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, a FIFA-licensed referee, came under heavy criticism after the goalless match, which Morocco won on penalties. Many Nigerian fans questioned several of his decisions during the game.

Speaking briefly in Rabat, Laryea played down the reaction and said criticism was part of football, especially in big matches.

“It was a crazy game,” Laryea said. “I know they’re not happy with me, but it’s all good. It’s football, it’s nothing much,” he told Sporty TV presenter Klinton Kod.

The 38-year-old was criticised for a number of foul decisions, with Nigerian supporters believing some calls went against the Super Eagles at important moments.

After the match, the debate continued on social media, with fans posting comments on the referee’s pages. Laryea later deactivated his Instagram account as the criticism grew.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not released any official statement on the referee’s performance, and it is unclear if any review will be carried out.
