Ahmed Musa Defends AFCON After Carragher’s Comments

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has spoken out against Jamie Carragher’s recent comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Liverpool legend caused controversy by saying that winning AFCON would not boost Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, suggesting the tournament lacks the prestige of others.

Carragher argued that even if Salah had a great season but only won AFCON with Egypt, it would not help his Ballon d’Or hopes. This statement sparked criticism from many, especially from African football figures.

Musa, who played a key role in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON win, quickly joined the debate. The 32-year-old shared a picture of himself holding the AFCON trophy on X (formerly Twitter) with a simple yet powerful message: “AFCON. Respect.”

Musa’s post adds to a growing call to give AFCON the respect it deserves, showing its importance and global relevance. AFCON, which has been held since 1957, has grown significantly in recent years, with the 2023 tournament attracting millions of viewers worldwide and increasing sponsorship revenue.

As the tournament’s importance continues to rise, Musa’s statement highlights the pride and respect players, like him, have for AFCON.
