Ahmed Musa responds to International retirement reports
Captain of Nigeria’s national football team, Ahmed Musa has denied reports that he has retired from international football.
Despite not being called up by former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic and not participating in any of Nigeria’s seven matches at the 2023 AFCON tournament, Musa clarified his status with the national team.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna following a friendly match he hosted, Musa addressed the speculations of his retirement, stating, “I only took a little break from the national team. But I didn’t exit the team.”
Musa last played for the Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifying match against Cape Verde in 2021. His most recent appearance before the AFCON was a brief seven-minute stint in a friendly against Guinea in January. Musa has been without a club since he ended his contract with Turkish side Sivasspor in February, fueling retirement rumors.
Throughout his career, Ahmed Musa has achieved significant success, winning championships on three continents. He has played in Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, England, Russia, and Turkey.
His accomplishments include three Russian Premier League titles with CSKA Moscow, the Saudi League and Super Cup with Al Nassr, the 2013 AFCON with Nigeria.
